Now, if your interest converges towards the installation of a photovoltaic system, the price depends essentially on the following factors:
- the type of silicon that makes up the photovoltaic cell: monocrystalline, polycrystalline or amorphous;
- The size of the plant.
In any case, it must be borne in mind that the choice of the type of panel and the size of the system are two dependent variables: the more efficient the energy of the plant, the smaller the space occupied by the latter.
Other variables of solar panels.
The type of material that makes up the panel is not, in any case, the only aspect that influences the dimensions of the system. They also depend on two other factors:
- energy consumption;
- The available surface on the roof.
The energy consumption depends on the size of your home and the number of people who live there. The annual energy consumption of a small house with two people is around 3200 kWh. If you now divide this by 0.85, you will get an estimate of the power needed to meet your needs. For example, if your annual consumption is 3200 kwh, the solar panels should be able to cover a power of 3800 kwh. To achieve this, you will need 15 solar panels of 260 Wp. The price will be around 9000 €.
The photovoltaic system: operation, types and features.

The photovoltaic system is composed of modules that convert solar energy into direct current. In turn, this is converted into alternating current through an inverter .
The types of photovoltaic system.
The photovoltaic systems can be:
- isolated (independent);
- Connected to the electrical network (connected network).
The independent systems are not connected to the electricity grid, which provides a solution in those cases where connection is not possible, as in mountain shelters.
Network-connected systems are unlikely to cover the energy needs of a family unit, but they can make a significant contribution to lightening invoices. In cases where the energy generated by the plant exceeds the requirement (which occurs more frequently in the case of industrial buildings), it can be introduced into the network.
The efficiency of solar panels.
The efficiency of solar panels depends on:
- type of modules chosen;
- quality of the components;
- Orientation of the panels (optimal orientation to the south).
- inclination of the panels (the optimum inclination is about 30 °);
- absence of shading;
- place of installation (irradiation is higher in southern Italy and less in the north);
- the weather
When it comes to modules, the types in the market are the following:
- With amorphous silicon.
Solar panels with monocrystalline silicon are the most expensive and those with the highest yields and are recognized by their black color. Polycrystallines have a simpler and faster production process. For this reason, its cost, as well as its performance, is lower compared to monocrystalline panels. However, on a practical level, the differences between the two variants are not so excessive, especially in the case of domestic installations and the two options are of excellent quality. Polycrystalline panels can have different colors and are usually blue or purple in color.

Finally, the panels with amorphous silicon are of the type with the lowest performance and the lowest cost: they do not use silicon crystals like the two previous types, but silicon powder. This makes its structure flexible, an aspect that can be useful when installing a system. Due to their lower efficiency, they occupy a larger surface area than poly and monocrystalline systems. They can be effective in case of high temperatures.

- With vacuum tube.
The former have the advantage of being less expensive and are particularly common in Italy. The latter, on the other hand, offer greater performance and, therefore, are a bit more expensive.
